<p></p> <p><b>Nieuwe pagina</b></p><div>'''Jan Ketelaar''' werd rooms-katholiek gedoopt te [['s-Heerenberg]] op 14 mei [[1744]] als zoon van Joannes Leonardus Ketelaar en Christina Mechteld Jansen.<br /> <br /> Op 19-jarige leeftijd meldde Jan zich als soldaat bij de VOC, en vertrok op 1 september [[1763]] met de ''Schagen'' vanaf de rede van Texel naar de Oost. De ''Schagen'' voer voor de VOC-kamer van Hoorn en kwam op 30 december aan bij Kaap de Goede Hoop. Hier zijn 51 man van boord gegaan, waaronder 37 soldaten. Een van hen was Jan Ketelaar. <br /> <br /> Aldus had een relatief groot aantal opvarenden het schip verlaten. De reden hiervoor wordt niet vermeld, maar wellicht was er een ziekte aan boord. Het feit dat er op de Kaap een grote groep nieuwe soldaten weer aan boord kwam, wijst in die richting. Toen de ''Schagen'' op 23 januari [[1764]] zijn reis voortzette, voer het niet rechtstreeks naar Batavia, maar ging van 22 mei tot 7 augustus voor anker in Tuticorin, een VOC-handelspost in Zuid-India, in de huidige staat Tamil Nadu. Daar debarkeerden alle soldaten, althans toen de ''Schagen'' op 22 september in Batavia aankwam, was er niet een soldaat meer aan boord. Het is dus de vraag of de soldaten die een jaar eerder uit Nederland waren vertrokken, wel voor Batavia bestemd waren.<br /> <br /> Jan was dus op de Kaap achtergebleven. Daar werd hij, om onbekende redenen, arbeidsongeschikt verklaard en ging terug naar Nederland. Op 29 april 1764 ging hij aan boord van de ''Westerveld'', een schip van de VOC-kamer Zeeland dat op de terugweg was uit China. De ''Westerveld'' kwam op 27 juli aan bij Fort Rammekens, bij de monding van het voormalige kanaal van Welzinge, dat toegang gaf tot de haven van Middelburg.<br /> <br /> Op 16 november 1764 vertrok Jan andermaal als soldaat naar de Oost. Het schip waarop hij voer, de ''Walenburg'' van de VOC-kamer van Rotterdam, verbleef van 21 februari tot 7 maart [[1765]] op Kaap de Goede Hoop en kwam op 23 juni van dat jaar aan in Batavia.
